How it's calculated

  1. 1The own-damage premium is a percentage of the car's IDV (Insured Declared Value), typically around 2 to 4 percent.
  2. 2Your No Claim Bonus reduces the own-damage premium for every claim-free year, up to 50 percent.
  3. 3The third-party premium is set by the IRDAI motor tariff for your engine capacity and is added on top.
  4. 4GST of 18 percent is applied to the own-damage and third-party premiums to reach the total.

Frequently asked questions

How is a car insurance premium calculated?+

A comprehensive premium has two parts: own-damage, which is a percentage of the car's IDV reduced by your No Claim Bonus, and third-party, which is fixed by the IRDAI tariff for your engine capacity. GST of 18 percent is added on top. This calculator estimates all three.

What is IDV?+

IDV, or Insured Declared Value, is the current market value of your car and the maximum the insurer will pay if it is stolen or written off. A higher IDV means a higher own-damage premium but a larger payout, so it should reflect the car's real value.

Why is the third-party premium entered manually?+

Third-party premiums are set by IRDAI based on engine capacity and are revised periodically. Rather than hard-code a figure that could go out of date, the calculator lets you enter the current amount from your insurer so the estimate stays accurate.

Does this include add-ons like zero depreciation?+

No. This is a base comprehensive estimate. Add-on covers such as zero depreciation, engine protection, or roadside assistance carry extra premium and would increase the total.

Is this an official quote?+

No. It is an illustrative estimate for planning. Actual premiums depend on the insurer, location, vehicle details, and add-ons. Always get a formal quote before buying.
